Documentary MYTH

Wassyl Slipak's death was painful news to the Ukrainian cultural community, again raising the sharp question: "Are we doing enough for our country during this extremely difficult time if the best among us are perishing"? 

Wassyl himself answered the question this way in one of his interviews: "All the blood being shed for Ukraine today should not stop us or send into a depression. It should give us the urge to fight even harder". 

And with our film we will continue his fight to ensure that events in Ukraine will be known to the entire world. The world will know the truth. The truth told by real stories of extraordinary personalities.

If we invented the story behind MYTH it would come across as very pretentious. When you learn about the life of Wassyl you will find it hard to believe it is the story of a real person. And not telling the story of a man who lived a short but incredibly bright life would be a crime. Death can be a release for the dying because there is nothing left to lose. But we lose. And this film is about a person we lost. 

What is more important - love for a girl or love for the motherland? Should artists fight in war zone or fight in other ways? Why wasn't Wassyl stopped by friends and family? Ukraine is above all or not enough? These and other questions are addressed in the movie "Myth". 

What moves those who volunteer to go to war? This is the essence and the central theme of the movies that we have filmed so far: "War at Your Own Expense," and "The Ukrainians". But now we carry this idea forward in a different way. "Myth" is primarily the deep, personal history of a human being. The portrait of Wassyl MYTH Slipak is the perfect microcosm of the changes taking place in Ukrainian society and in particular the lives of Ukrainian volunteers.

SYNOPSIS

"Myth" is the documentary story of Wassyl Slipak - a world-renowned opera singer with a unique voice. He left Lviv as a young man to sing in Canada and in the United States. He performed in Carnegie Hall. And after winning an international competition in France, he became a soloist at the Paris Opera.

One of his favorite songs was the Mephistopheles aria. Later he took his stage name MYTH after the name of his favorite character. Wassyl lived in France for 19 years and had everything one could possibly want in life: fame, fulfilling work, faithful friends, and love. 

He participated in the Revolution of Dignity, leading the demonstrations in France, and later founded an influential volunteer organization "Ukrainian Brotherhood", aimed at supporting Ukraine.

He seemed to have been doing as much as any person in a creative profession could. But in 2015 Wassyl decided to leave opera and promising career in Europe and join the fight as a member of the Volunteer Ukrainian Corps when his country became a war zone. On June 29, 2016, when performing combat tasks Wassyl was killed by a sniper bullet.

CREATION OF THE MOVIE

We have been working on "Myth" for over six months.  We have collected all archival videos about Wassyl that are possible to collect. We have filmed on the East of Ukraine, Lviv, Kyiv and Paris.

We met with those who were with Wassyl in the trenches and those who went with him to school. We found his childhood friends, his teachers, professors from Lviv Conservatory, colleagues in the volunteer activities, artists, composers and conductors in France and Ukraine. We talked to his relatives, brothers, parents. Those whom he loved and who loved him.

We are grateful to those who opened their hearts and shared their sincere feelings, their love and their pain. A special gratitude for all trust and support goes to Wassyl's brother Orest who became our guide in filming the movie. 

One of the most difficult stages in shooting the movie was filming in Paris. But with the help of supporting letters from the French Institute in Ukraine, the Ministry of Culture in Ukraine and the State Agency for Cinema, we were able to finish our plan. Every time our team was facing a dead-end, these letters of support were like keys that opened the doors leading to new characters for our movie. And now, the filming part is complete. 

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT 

At this time we are turning to crowdfunding to raise the necessary funds to pay talented professionals to complete our post-production, as well as editing, graphics, sound, color correction and image correction of damaged archived materials. We also plan to use animation in the film. A large part of our funding will go towards creation of animated scenes.

Any amount raised over the desired amount will be used for representing the movie at various international film festivals. The film "Myth" will be shown in cinemas in Ukraine and abroad, as well as on television. Several Ukrainian and French TV channels have already expressed their desire to acquire the rights to show the movie.

"HEROES DO NOT DIE" is a very powerful message. But, in fact, heroes do not live on unless we remember them.   

This documentary about a great Ukrainian is the best tribute and gift from today to future generations. We are creating this movie to be relevant, understandable, and important for many years to come.
