The Week of Contemp Plays
HISTORY
Our festival is the only scheduled annual event for the day which presents expert cross-section of the new Ukrainian theater texts. This is the launch pad for young Ukrainian authors.
"The Week of Contemporary Plays":
- Discovers the names of "Ukrainian new drama"
- Shapes the language of the future theater
- Allows audience to meet with the authorial texts
- Promotes the format of stage reading and further public discussion
- Helps to form the author's tone, language and meanings
- Actualizes the modern society problems.
" The Week of Contemporary Plays " does not give answers, but places the questions. This festival is essential to both theater experts and the audience. The "Week" works upon theater landscape update, offers an alternative repertoire to the independent stages and state theaters.
Each year the festival attracts thousands of spectators concerned with the future of Ukrainian theater.
ADMISSION TO ALL THE FESTIVAL EVENTS IS TRADITIONALLY FREE.
History of the festival
The founder of the festival is the "TEXT" centre. The organizers of the festival during 5 years of its existence have enhanced the young theater movement in Ukraine: discovered 67 new authors, featured 125 new plays. Later on texts discovered during the festival turned into more than 20 performances.
Festival program 2015
This year the festival program includes a number of unique events:
- As part of the program "Friends don't get lost at war or Russian assault force" the premiere of the performance after Oleg Syentsov's (Putin's regime prisoner illegally sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment) play "Nomera". Director - Anastasia Patlay, producer - Natalia Joseph (Moscow). Famous Ukrainian actors will also takepart. The premiere will take place on the stage of a strategic partner of the festival - the National Academic Theater n.a. Ivan Franko.
- This year thanks to the strategic partner the Goethe Institute in Ukraine a considerable program for translators and playwrights will be presented at the festival: workshop from one of the key Russian – German Ukrainian - German translators Lydia Nagel.
- For the first time at the festival "Program for children" will take place. It aims to work with the audience from the youngest children to teenagers. The workshops from Elena Gryemina (the leader of Moscow opposition Teatr.DOC) and readings of new Ukrainian texts will take place as part of festival program. One of them will be enacted at the academic scene.
- Art director of the Meyerhold Center and "School for theater leader" Elena Kowalska will be a guest of the festival. She will teach separate master classes for playwrights, art managers and theater practitioners.
We have presented not even half of the festival program above. Thanks to our strategic partners "The Week of Contemporary Plays" managed to form part of the program carrying a value of 70 000 UAH. But we still lack 57 000 UAH.
The curators of "Week of Contemporary Plays" – the art director of special projects of the National Academic Theater n.a. Ivan Franco assistant, director Andrey May, playwright Den Gumenniy, theater manager and critic Christina Khomenko have recourse to you! Because "The Week" is primarily the people and for the people!
